Catastrophe theory and resonance line shapes in atom-surface scattering
نویسندگان
چکیده
The measured high-resolution energy profile of a selective adsorption resonance in the scattering of He atoms from NaCl~001! is found to exhibit a mixed-extrema structure reminiscent of a Fano-type function. An analysis of the topological properties of the resonance line shape as a function of the surface temperature reveals a behavior which is isomorphic to the simplest elementary catastrophe, the fold catastrophe. As the crystal temperature approaches the surface Debye temperature QD of NaCl the resonance profile undergoes a transition in its topology according to the behavior of the fold catastrophe. The analysis is sufficiently general in order to be extended to any resonant scattering event displaying Fano-type profiles. @S0163-1829~99!00633-5#

Calculation of the Induced Charge Distribution on the Surface of a Metallic Nanoparticle Due to an Oscillating Dipole Using Discrete Dipole Approximation method
In this paper, the interaction between an oscillating dipole moment and a Silver nanoparticle has been studied. Our calculations are based on Mie scattering theory and discrete dipole approximation(DDA) method. At first, the resonance frequency due to excitingthe localized surface plasmons has been obtained using Mie scattering theory and then by exciting a dipole moment in theclose proximity of...
متن کاملTunable Plasmonic Nanoparticles Based on Prolate Spheroids
Metallic nanoparticles can exhibit very large optical extinction in the visible spectrum due to localized surface plasmon resonance. Spherical plasmonic nanoparticles have been the subject of numerous studies in recent years due to the fact that the scattering response of spheres can be analytically evaluated using Mie theory. However a major disadvantage of metallic spherical nanoparticles is ...
متن کاملCollisional line shapes for low frequency vibrations of adsorbates on a metal surface.
The dynamics of atoms or molecules adsorbed on a metal surface, and excited by collisions with an atomic beam, are treated within a theory that includes energy dissipation into lattice vibrations by means of a frequency and temperature dependent friction function. The theory provides dynamic structure factors for energy transfer derived from collisional time correlation functions. It describes ...
متن کاملPolymer surface and thin film vibrational dynamics of poly(methyl methacrylate), polybutadiene, and polystyrene.
Inelastic helium atom scattering has been used to investigate the vibrational dynamics at the polymer vacuum interface of poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene, and polybutadiene thin films on SiO(x)Si(100). Experiments were performed for a large range of surface temperatures below and above the glass transition of these three polymers. The broad multiphonon feature that arises in the inelasti...
متن کاملEffect of parallel velocity on the formation of a Kondo resonance in the atom-surface interaction
The interesting phenomena that may arise in the context of impurity states in a metal are well established. In certain parameter ranges there exist collective many-body states, which exhibit unusual low-energy behavior. In particular there appear resonances in the electronic spectral functions near the Fermi level associated with the screening of the spin of the impurity ~the Kondo effect! or w...
